Are Multi-Spray Showers Sustainable?

Some people call them a great form of relaxation. Others call them a “human car wash.” Does a multi-outlet shower system have a place in the Responsible Bathroom?

The answer is a qualified yes. As with most things in life, balance is key. If you want that slice of cake tonight, you’re probably going to hit the gym in the morning. If you want a multi-headed shower system, look at ways to offset the indulgence:

  • Ask your plumber to install diverters in the shower to alternate between showerheads. Actually the preferred experience for most users, diverter valves shift the water flow among different showerheads. Use a high-efficiency showerhead as your main showerhead.
  • Switch to a front loading clothes washer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), By switching to an ENERGY STAR®-rated, front loading washing machine, water use is cut in half.
  • Use your ENERGY STAR dishwasher instead of hand washing dishes. Using a dishwasher can use 30% less water over washing dishes by hand
  • Wash the car at a carwash, not in the driveway. Most hoses have no flow restrictors and often lay running continuously as you soap up the car. Many car washes recycle and clean their water for reuse. These closed loop systems continuously reuse water versus running it down the drain.
